COVID-19 & Other
What role can I play to help make sure dental offices remain a safe environment for all?
This pandemic is something new to all of us, and the only way to get through it is to work together. While we are doing all that we can to make the office safe for all, there are a few small things you, the patient, can do to help us out.
If you are feeling feverish or experiencing any flu-like symptoms, we ask that you refrain from coming into the office. Instead, give us a call ahead of time and we will be more than happy to reschedule your appointment a few weeks out. Additionally, if you have traveled or been in contact with anyone who has traveled, please wait at least two weeks before coming into our San Jose dental office to make sure that you are not exhibiting any signs of COVID infection.
Patient Safety at Our San Jose Dentist Office
All California residents are recommended to wear masks when leaving the house regardless, and we would encourage the same when coming into the office. Now of course, we cannot work on you with the mask on, but you can at least wear it while checking in and when heading out. We also ask that after checking in, you wait in your car of outside until we call you to let you know we are ready for you.
Finally, please refrain from bringing too many family members with you too your appointment if they do not have an appointment themselves. We would like to reduce crowding in our dentist office as much as possible to avoid patient-patient interaction.
As long as we all do our part and remain aware of our surroundings and effect on it, we will be able to continue slowing the spread of COVID-19 and hopefully return to life as normal! Contact Advanced Dentistry by Design in the 95133 area if you have questions or would like to schedule your next appointment!
What steps will the office be taking to ensure patient health and safety?
Advanced Dentistry by Design has always been very diligent about maintaining a high level of cleanliness and maintaining a sterile environment. However, we understand that different times call for different measures and will therefore be implementing additional protocols to make sure our patients and staff feel as safe as possible.
Infection Control at Our Dentist Office in 95133
For information on our existing and new health and safety protocols, check out our blog on how we’re getting the office ready for re-opening, linked below:
https://www.advdentsj.com/your-first-visit/
We will continually be updating and improving our standards as we receive more information from the government and California Dental Association.
When will the office be opening back up again?
We have been closely monitoring the COVID situation and shelter in place updates from both our governor and local and national dental associations to determine when the best time to open the practice back up is and under what conditions.
While it may be some time until we are able to get back up and running at full capacity, we are hoping to be able to at least open up with a limited schedule in the coming weeks. This means that we will resume conducting elective procedures and dental exams as normal, but will limit the schedule to reduce large crowds of patients in the office. We will also be implementing new protocols to ensure our dentist office in San Jose is a safe environment for our patients and staff.

Whether you wear braces or not, protecting your smile while playing sports is tremendously important. Mouthguards help protect your teeth and gums from injury, and picking the right one is essential. There are three basic types of mouthguards: the pre-made mouthguard, the “boil-and-bite” fitted mouthguard, and a custom-made mouthguard.

Why are fluoride treatments important?
Fluoride is effective in preventing cavities and tooth decay, and in preventing plaque from building up and hardening on the tooth’s surface.
General Dentistry in San Jose, CA
Fluoride treatment in our dentist office takes just a few minutes and requires you to not rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow your teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health and our recommendation, you should have a fluoride treatment every three, six, or twelve months.

Why do I need a root canal?
In the past, the only solution for a diseased nerve or infected tooth was to take it out. Today with root canal treatment in San Jose, CA, saving teeth has become easier with a greater prognosis. A tooth becomes infected when a crack or deep cavity reaches the nerve, allowing bacteria to run through the nerve down to the end of the root. If left untreated, this can lead to abscess formation, which can cause pain and swelling. This can not only injure your jawbones, but can be detrimental to your overall health.
Root Canal Treatment in San Jose, CA
During root canal treatment, the infected nerve is removed and the interior of the tooth cleaned and sealed with a biocompatible material. Finally, the tooth is filled with dental composite or, depending on the extent of the decay, we may recommend placing a crown on top. As long as you continue to care for your teeth and gums with regular brushing, flossing, and checkups, your restored tooth can last a lifetime.

Why do I need an extraction and what can I expect?
Gentle Tooth Extractions Near 95133
Sometimes it is necessary to remove a tooth. A stubborn baby tooth may have misshapen or long roots that prevent it from falling out as it should, or a tooth may have so much decay that it puts the surrounding teeth and jaw at risk of decay, that we may recommend removal and replacement with a bridge or implant. Infection, orthodontic correction, or problems with a wisdom tooth may also necessitate removal of a tooth.
During dental extractions in San Jose, our dentists ensure that the patient is comfortable, using local anesthesia in the area and extraction techniques that make the procedure as atraumatic and painless as possible!
General Dentistry
If I brush and floss, why do I need a professional teeth cleaning?
Sometimes patients put off their professional teeth cleanings, believing that brushing and flossing alone are enough to combat cavities. Unfortunately, when they visit the dentist, they find that they do have cavities and, sometimes, more significant problems like gingivitis.
Brushing and flossing at least twice daily helps lower your risks for preventable oral health conditions, including cavities and periodontal disease. However, these good habits alone are not enough. To significantly lower your risks, professional teeth cleanings are crucial.
It is only through specialized tools—in the hands of a dental professional—that we can significantly mitigate your risks. These tools remove stubborn bacteria and plaque that even the best brushing and flossing sessions leave behind.
In our San Jose dental office, we clean teeth thoroughly and gently, and our dental professionals look for telltale signs of gingivitis and gum disease during your cleaning sessions. We can also speak to you about areas you may be missing during brushing and flossing and provide tips to help you make the most of your at-home routine.
Schedule Your Teeth Cleaning in San Jose
If it’s time for your next teeth cleaning, or if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, we are here to arrange your next appointment.
If I don’t notice issues, do I still need a dental exam?
Skipping a dental exam in San Jose is the same as skipping your annual physical. Waiting to visit the dentist when something goes wrong—toothache, oral health change, jaw swelling—puts you at risk for tooth loss, and more.
The American Dental Association recommends comprehensive dental exams and teeth cleanings twice per year, and this is for patients with healthy teeth and gums. It is this schedule that promotes lifelong oral health.
Your dental exam includes:
- A comprehensive check of your teeth and gums
- An oral cancer screening
- X-rays periodically
- A professional teeth cleaning—on exam day or soon after
Your exam findings tell your San Jose dentist whether you need general dental care, such as fillings or other specific treatments to restore your oral health.
At Advanced Dentistry by Design, we prefer to treat emerging issues rather than advanced oral health conditions. And the only way to catch developing problems is through regular dental exams. This approach is better for your oral health, and it helps you avoid invasive and costly treatments down the line.

We see patients of all ages and welcome you to schedule your family’s next dental exams. We are also here to answer any questions that you might have.
What happens during my dental exam?
Dental checkups in San Jose are crucial to your long-term oral health and wellness. And a dental exam allows your dentist to do the following:
- Compare oral changes between visits.
- Check your teeth and gums for emerging dental health conditions.
- Screen for oral cancers
- Plan dental treatments based on findings
- Talk to you about your oral health.
Periodically, your dentist recommends x-rays to have a look below the surface as well. This allows for comparisons with older films and helps spot potential issues before they become costly or time-consuming problems.
Based on findings, your dentist creates a treatment schedule to correct any issues and restore you to better oral health. For example, your dentist may find an emerging cavity that requires a small filling. If you skip your dental appointment, your dentist may also encounter a larger area of decay that can compromise your tooth’s integrity. It is also better to catch gum disease in the gingivitis stage when it is still reversible instead of only treatable.
Your dentist in San Jose also makes time to answer your questions and share information with you during your appointment.
Is It Time for Your Dental Checkup?
If it’s time for your next exam, or if you have any questions, contact a dental team member today.
What happens if I skip teeth cleanings?
Even if you brush and floss regularly, these good habits simply are not enough to significantly lower your risks for cavities, infections, and gum disease. Professional teeth cleanings in San Jose, CA are key when it comes to lowering your risks for preventable oral health problems.
Untreated infections can spread and cost you your smile. Without treatment, gum disease leads to tooth loss and even body health problems related to the heart. Gum disease has also been linked to dementia. Preventing rather than reversing problems is always less invasive and less expensive. Additionally, professional teeth cleaning means less time in the dental chair than periodontal treatment.
Unless you have a diagnosed condition or are prone to cavities and require a custom schedule, your San Jose dentist recommends twice-yearly teeth cleanings. These appointments with our hygienist remove stubborn bacteria and tartar that put you at risk.
At Advanced Dentistry by Design, we treat patients of all ages and always emphasize prevention to help you and your loved ones maintain healthy smiles.

Do whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes actually work?
The least expensive options are whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes. Designed to have whitening capabilities, toothpastes and mouthwashes work to remove surface stains using mild abrasives. However, unlike bleaching materials used in professional whitening procedures in San Jose, these products do not lighten the actual color shade of the tooth. Whitening toothpastes affect surface stains and will mildly lighten your teeth.
What are paint-on teeth whiteners and how do they work?
At Home Teeth Whitening Near 95133
There are many over-the-counter teeth whitening options, and one type of readily accessible whitening product is commonly referred to as paint-on teeth whiteners. Paint-on whiteners can be purchased over the counter and are generally less expensive and less effective than whitening strips or professional options. Paint-on teeth whiteners consist of a gel that a user applies to the teeth using a small brush. Paint-on whitening gel hardens into a film that coats the treated teeth and dissolves in the mouth. As with any teeth whitening regimen, we recommend that you consult with our dentist in San Jose, CA before you begin treating discolored teeth.
What are composite fillings and how can they change the look of my teeth?
Composite dental fillings are a conservative, natural-looking solution for teeth with small cavities, fractures, gaps or discolorations. Composites are a more esthetic alternative to silver, amalgam fillings and, as a result, have become the preferred material for fixing a tooth.
Dental Fillings in San Jose, CA
Composites are retained onto a tooth by bonding, where the material is allowed to extend into the pore-like tubules of your tooth and form a strong, interlocking connection. Composites come in multiple shades that can be layered and mixed to ensure that they match your tooth’s natural color, and a high polish allows for an optimum cosmetic result.
What are veneers made of?
Cosmetic Enhancements with Porcelain Veneers
Veneers in San Jose, CA are made of ceramic and stacked with porcelain. This allows our cosmetic dentist to use multiple shades when designing the veneer to best match your natural color. It also gives the veneer a natural, glossy sheen and allows us to replicate all the nuances and characteristics of a natural tooth. The goal is to give you a beautiful smile that shines, but also looks natural as well!
I’m not happy with the look of my teeth. How can you help?
As the most common mantra in dentistry goes, each smile is different, and as such, treatments vary from patient to patient. Just as you yourself are unique, your treatment should be customized to fit your needs and desires.
Cosmetic Dentistry in the 95133 Area
Before rendering any cosmetic dental treatment in San Jose, our dentists make sure to sit down with the patient for a consultation, where we take the appropriate records and discuss ideal and alternative treatment plans that will give the patient the smile they are looking for, all the while maintaining the health and integrity of their natural dentition. Schedule a consultation with our cosmetic dentist today!
What are teeth whitening strips and how do they work?
Teeth Whitening Options Near 95133
Teeth whitening strips are thin, flexible plastic (polyethylene) strips with a thin film of hydrogen peroxide bleaching on one side. Whitening strip kits come with two types of strips: strips for the upper teeth and strips for the lower teeth. The bleaching agent is applied by placing the strips across your teeth and gently pressing the strips into place to ensure contact with all your teeth. Teeth whitening strips are typically worn for 30 minutes a day, twice a day. The duration of treatment will vary. Contact our dentist office in San Jose for more information on teeth whitening!
What is a dental implant?
Replace Missing Teeth with Dental Implants
Dental implants in San Jose, CA are another esthetic fix for a missing tooth and perhaps mimic most what it is like to still have a natural tooth in the mouth – in that it stands alone and does not involve adjacent teeth. After the oral surgeon surgically places the implant screw in the bone where the gap is, 2-3 months are allowed for healing and osseointegration. Osseointegration is the process by which your natural bone grows between the threads of the implant, anchoring it in your jaw much like your teeth are. After this phase, we are then able to place a crown on top of the implant screw, filling the gap and making the implant functional. Just as with the dental bridge, implants are an aesthetic, permanent way to fill the gap between two teeth, and with proper home care can last 10-20 years or more.
What is tray bleaching?
Professional Teeth Whitening in San Jose, CA
Tray bleaching is a type of professional teeth whitening in San Jose, CA that uses custom-made trays and whitening gel only available through our office. The whitening gel is placed in custom-fitted trays that fit perfectly over your teeth. As the peroxide in the gel breaks down, hydroxyradicals help whiten stained teeth. Unlike strips, this process whitens all your natural teeth and may contain special ingredients to ensure maximum comfort. At-home professional tray whitening generally takes 10-14 days, although you may notice results in as little as three to five days.
What are veneers?
Porcelain Veneers in San Jose, CA
Veneers are a highly esthetic, conservative approach to repairing misshapen, misaligned, discolored teeth. The design for each porcelain veneer in San Jose, CA depends on each individual tooth and the desired end result. It involves shaving off a little bit of the outer, visible surface of the tooth to make room for the veneer material. An impression is then taken and the veneer designed to bond on to the tooth.
Children’s Dentistry
What can I expect at my child’s first dental visit?
Your child’s first visit to our pediatric dentist in San Jose should be enjoyable. Children are not born with a natural fear of the dentist, but they can fear the unknown. Our team makes a special effort to talk to your child cheerfully and to use simple, pleasant words to describe each treatment. We want you and your child to feel at ease from the moment your family arrives at our office. The more you and your child know about the first visit, the better you will feel.
Children’s Dentistry in the 95133 Area
Depending on your child’s level of comfort and willingness, during his or her first visit we will take x-rays of their teeth, and our hygienist will clean and polish the teeth. We will evaluate your child’s craniofacial development and make appropriate recommendations for the necessary next steps.
At what age should children begin dental visits?
Your Child’s First Dentist Visit Near 95133
Children should visit the children’s dentist by their first birthday. It is important that your child’s newly-erupted teeth (erupting between 6 and 12 months of age) receive proper pediatric dental care in 95133 and benefit from proper oral hygiene habits right from the beginning. Children can enjoy getting to know their teeth!
When do children’s new teeth arrive?
Your child’s first primary teeth (baby teeth) will begin to erupt between the ages of 6 and 12 months and will continue to erupt until about age 3. During this time, your child’s gums may feel tender and sore. To help alleviate this discomfort, we recommend that you soothe the gums by rubbing a clean finger or a cool, wet cloth across them. You may also choose to make use of a teething ring. When your child has finished teething, you can expect a total of 20 primary teeth!
As your child’s permanent teeth begin to erupt, he or she will lose primary teeth at various times throughout childhood. Permanent teeth begin erupting at age 6 and can continue until age 21. Adults have 28 regular permanent teeth and four wisdom teeth.

What’s the best way to prevent tooth decay in children’s teeth?
Tooth decay is caused by sugars that remain in the mouth and become an acid that can break down teeth. Children are at high risk for tooth decay for a simple reason—many children and adolescents do not practice regular, good oral hygiene habits. Proper brushing and flossing routines combined with regular dental visits to our children’s dentist in San Jose help keep tooth decay away.
Contact Our 95133 Dentist Office to Schedule an Exam!
Please schedule an appointment with our children’s dentist every six months for regular dental cleanings and checkups. We recommend fluoride treatments twice a year along with cleanings to help keep teeth at their strongest. We also recommend tooth sealants because they seal the deep grooves in your child’s teeth, preventing decay from forming in these hard-to-reach areas. Sealants last for several years, and we will monitor them at your child’s regular checkups.
What is early intervention orthodontics?
Kids grow so rapidly that sometimes you turn around and your toddler is starting high school. If you have ever had a child who has experienced growth difficulties, you know that many of them can be corrected during the growth process. Teeth and jaw growth are no different.
By addressing conditions early while your child is still growing, they often have faster and more successful results.
We evaluate children as early as five years old to determine if they are on track for a healthy bite and properly aligned teeth. In some cases, pacifier use, mouth breathing, thumb sucking, and genetics can cause jaws to develop incorrectly.
By taking corrective action early, we can often avoid the need to remove perfectly healthy permanent teeth (often bicuspids) for orthodontic purposes in the future. Early intervention orthodontic treatment also results in a more attractive appearance because things like a diastema (a gap between the front teeth) and protrusion (bucked teeth) can often be avoided with the proper treatment.
Children’s Orthodontics Near San Jose, CA
Palatal expanders, ALF treatment, space holders, full braces, and partial braces are each part of early orthodontic intervention treatment options to reduce the amount of time your child spends in braces later.
When you bring your child to our San Jose dental office, we will provide this service at the appropriate time so that you can make the best decision regarding the future of your child’s smile.
Orthodontics
Am I too old for orthodontics?
At Advanced Dentistry by Design, we think you’re never too old to enjoy a straight and comfortable smile. And orthodontics is becoming increasingly popular with adults. It could be that they needed orthodontics in childhood, but the matter was not pursued—or they underwent orthodontics and later experienced a relapse. Whatever the scenario, your dentist in San Jose provides orthodontic options to patients of all ages, including adults.
The first step is a conversation and exam in our dental office. We go over our orthodontic options, and your dentist decides whether treatment will benefit you and your smile goals. Options include Invisalign in San Jose and more traditional orthodontic therapies.
Invisalign is a clear aligner that is nearly undetectable to others. Because it is discreet, it is the more popular option for working adults.
Traditional braces mean brackets and wires. This method may be recommended if you have substantial orthodontic issues.
Treatment time is similar no matter the option, and your dentist will provide the timeline before you start therapy.
Following your treatment, we create a customized retainer to prevent orthodontic relapse.
Smiling with Confidence Knows No Age!

Can people tell that I’m wearing Invisalign?
As the name implies, Invisalign clear braces are virtually invisible, meaning you can straighten your teeth without anyone being able to tell! A far cry from the metal brackets and wires of traditional braces, Invisalign treatment is done with clear aligners that fit comfortably over your teeth and are completely see-through.

Invisalign is much gentler than traditional braces. Each tray exerts a gentle pressure on the teeth to move them, making the whole experience much more comfortable for you. Crowns and Bridges
How do I properly care for my dental crown?
You recently got a new crown for a problematic tooth, and you feel like you’re ready to take on anything. Your smile is finally back to its full function, and you’re proud of showing off your new and improved pearly whites. But now that you have a dental crown, how exactly do you take care of it to make sure it lasts?
Making Your Dental Crowns Last
With the proper dental care in Berryessa, you can easily extend your dental crown’s lifespan—even over 15 years! We believe that the best way to care for your dental crown is to combine routine visits to Advanced Dentistry by Design with a proper dental care regimen at home.
Professional dental care includes exams and cleanings, which are essential for preserving your smile and ensuring your dental crown lasts for years to come. Here are three helpful hints for at-home dental care:
- Brush your teeth twice daily to remove plaque and maintain a strong smile
- Floss daily to stimulate your gums and clean between your teeth
- Avoid eating/chewing hard or sticky foods as they can cause breakage
Foods To Avoid with Dental Crowns
Certain foods can cause damage to your dental crown, so be sure you are aware of what you’re eating and how it can affect your new tooth. The following foods can put too much pressure on your dental crown:
- Nuts
- Crunchy fresh fruits and vegetables (i.e., carrots, apples)
- Hard or chewy candies and desserts (i.e., lollipops, caramel)
- Chewing gum

What is a bridge?
Bridges are a highly esthetic, non-removable way to fill a gap in the smile and, with proper home care, can last the patient anywhere between 10-20 years or longer. A variety of materials can be used to fabricate the bridge, and these options will all be discussed with you and decided on taking esthetics, functionality, and durability into account. When it comes to crowns and bridges, the rabbit hole goes deep, so never hesitate to ask us for more information, and we’ll be happy to explain!
What are crowns?
Crowns are a cosmetic restoration used to improve a tooth’s shape or to strengthen a tooth. They are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or for which tooth decay has destroyed portions of the teeth. A crown is a cap cemented onto an existing tooth. The crown usually covers the portion of the tooth above the gum line. In effect, it becomes your tooth’s new outer surface. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and resist wear and fracture. Crowns are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength remaining to hold a filling. Unlike fillings, your crown is created in a lab from your unique tooth impression, which allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. Your crown is then sculpted just for you so that your smile can look natural, your bite feels perfect, and your mouth feels strong and healthy.

How does Invisalign work, and what are the benefits of a straighter smile?
Everyone wants beautiful, straight teeth, but many people may need a little extra help to get a Hollywood-calibre smile. Invisalign is one of the ways our patients can get the smile of their dreams.
Since 1997, Invisalign has taken the dentistry world by storm, and it’s easy to understand why. Invisalign has helped millions of people get straighter teeth in half the time of traditional braces. Advanced Dentistry by Design is proud to offer orthodontic treatment to patients of all ages, including Invisalign, in San Jose, CA.
How Invisalign Works
Invisalign clear aligners are smooth, plastic trays created from a 3D scan of your smile. Fabricated in an Invisalign lab, the removable trays fit over the upper and lower teeth, much like a mouthguard or retainer.
The aligners are thin, but strong, and they are virtually invisible, so no one may even notice you’re wearing them. The aligner system works in a sequence, and every two weeks, you receive the next set in the series. Each set is slightly more snug than the last so it can gradually reposition misaligned teeth.
Benefits of Having Straight Teeth
There are several health benefits of having straight teeth. A straighter smile can:
- Re-energize one’s appearance
- Boost one’s self-confidence
- Reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease
- Promote clearer speech
- Evenly distribute biting/chewing forces
- Improve digestion
When you have a symmetrical smile, your jaws and teeth can perform their necessary functions with more ease, comfortability, and efficiency. Straight teeth are also less likely to incur injuries, like chips or fractures!

Invisalign is much gentler than traditional braces. Each tray exerts a gentle pressure on the teeth to move them, making the whole experience much more comfortable for you. The absence of brackets and wires also means less irritation to your lips and cheeks. With Invisalign clear braces, they not only look like nothing’s there, but it feels like nothing’s there, too!

Dentures
What are the different types of dentures?
Dentures in San Jose, CA can complete your smile and make you feel like a superstar. There are several different dentures, including complete (full) dentures, partial dentures, and implant-retained dentures. Each of these dentures have their own unique set of benefits and characteristics, but one thing is certain—they all can restore your smile!
#1 Complete (Full) Dentures
Complete, or full dentures, replace all of your teeth, sitting on top of the gums instead of being attached to the remaining teeth. Within 8-12 weeks of tooth removal or extraction, complete dentures can be placed. Once they are placed, you will be ready to greet the world with your new, beautiful smile!
#2 Partial Dentures
Partial dentures help complete your natural smile if you’re missing only some of your teeth. Parietal dentures can be removed at will, but they also help prevent your surrounding teeth from shifting into the empty spaces left behind. These dentures are attached to your remaining teeth and create a seamless and natural-looking smile.
#3 Implant-Retained Dentures
Implant-retained dentures stay secure in your mouth because a dental implant supports the denture. The implant provides a solid foundation for the denture, which helps your new smile stay in place. These dentures can be removed for cleaning and maintenance as well.

Will my dentures look natural?
Missing teeth can impact several areas of your life, including your diet, speech, and emotional well-being. But missing teeth can also lead to future oral health problems like fractures and cavities due to tooth migration—teeth moving toward smile gaps.
Your dentist does not want these things to happen to you, which is why we offer tooth replacement options, including dentures in San Jose.
As far as your dentures looking natural, your dentist takes measures to ensure the proper fit, function, and look of your new prosthetic. This starts when we take careful impressions of your mouth, which are used to craft your new restoration. We also make sure that your denture’s color, shape, and fit complements your face and looks natural.
When your denture is ready, your dentist makes final adjustments until your new smile feels good inside your mouth.
Of course, there is an adjustment curve, but this period passes. Before you know it, you’ll feel comfortable with your new smile and confident when eating, speaking, and laughing with family and friends.

What are dentures?
Dentures are natural-looking replacement teeth that are removable. There are two types of dentures: full and partial. Full dentures are given to patients whose natural teeth have all been removed. Partial dentures are attached to a metal frame that is connected to a patient’s natural teeth. It is just as important to care for your dentures as you would your natural teeth, as well as your gums, cheeks, and tongue.
Just because you’re missing your teeth doesn’t mean you should stop coming for your regular dental check-ups! Routine dental exams are important to ensure your dentures continue to fit well, as well as to check for any lesions, sores, or signs of oral cancer or infection.
Extractions
