Root Canal Therapy
In the past, the only solution for a diseased nerve or infected tooth was to take it out. Today with root canal treatment, saving teeth has become easier with a greater prognosis. A tooth becomes infected when a crack or deep cavity reaches the nerve, allowing bacteria to run through the nerve down to the end of the root. If left untreated, this can lead to abscess formation, which can cause pain and swelling. This can not only injure your jawbones, but can be detrimental to your overall health.
During root canal treatment, the infected nerve is removed and the interior of the tooth cleaned and sealed with a biocompatible material. Finally, the tooth is filled with dental composite or, depending on the extent of the decay, we may recommend placing a crown on top. As long as you continue to care for your teeth and gums with regular brushing, flossing, and checkups, your restored tooth can last a lifetime.
