Dental emergencies have terrible timing. A tooth starts throbbing at night. A crown comes loose during lunch. A child chips a tooth on the weekend. You bite down, and suddenly something feels very wrong.

When that happens, the first thing to do is call us. At Advanced Dentistry by Design in San Jose, we set aside time specifically for dental emergencies, and we are here to help you figure out what needs urgent care and what to do while you are on your way.

If it feels urgent, do not talk yourself out of calling

A dental emergency does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it is swelling. Sometimes it is a broken tooth with no pain yet. Sometimes it is a filling that fell out and left your tooth sensitive to air, food, or temperature.

If something feels off about your smile, call us. Our team will listen, ask the right questions, and help you decide the best next step.

Step 1: Stay calm and protect the area

The first few minutes matter, but panic does not help. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water if there is blood, food, or debris. If there is swelling, use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek in short intervals.

Avoid chewing on the affected side until we evaluate the tooth. If something sharp is cutting your tongue, cheek, or lip, cover it with orthodontic wax if you have it.

Step 2: Call our San Jose emergency dentist

Call (408) 258-5054 as soon as you can.

Tell us what happened, when it started, whether you are in pain, and whether there is swelling, bleeding, fever, trauma, or a missing tooth. These details help us understand how quickly you need to be seen.

We offer quick, gentle, compassionate emergency dental care for tooth pain, knocked-out teeth, broken teeth, chipped teeth, facial injuries, crown problems, filling problems, abscesses, and anything that feels wrong with your smile.

Step 3: Know when to seek medical emergency care first

Most dental emergencies should be handled by a dentist, but some symptoms need medical attention first. If you have trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, severe facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, or swelling that is spreading into your face, jaw, eye, or neck, seek emergency medical care right away.

Once you are medically stable, we can help address the dental cause.

If you have a knocked-out tooth

A knocked-out adult tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently, but do not scrub it or remove attached tissue. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket. If you cannot, keep it moist in milk or water and call us immediately for instructions.

Do not try to reinsert a baby tooth. If a child loses a baby tooth from trauma, call us so we can guide you safely.

If you have a broken or chipped tooth

A chipped tooth may not hurt right away, but it still needs attention. Rinse your mouth with warm water and try to save any pieces of the tooth. If there is swelling, use a cold compress on the outside of the face.

Avoid chewing on that side. A small chip may need smoothing, bonding, or a filling, while more serious damage may need a crown, root canal, or another repair. We use dental x-ray scans and other diagnostic tools to understand the problem quickly and recommend the right treatment.

If you have a severe toothache

Tooth pain can come from decay, infection, cracked teeth, gum problems, or pressure inside the tooth. While you wait to be seen, rinse gently with warm water and floss carefully to remove anything trapped between the teeth. A cold compress may help if there is swelling.

Do not place aspirin directly on the gums or tooth. It can irritate or burn the tissue. Call us right away, especially if the pain is constant, throbbing, waking you up, or paired with swelling. You may need a filling, root canal treatment, infection care, or another solution to relieve the cause.

If a crown or filling comes loose

A loose crown or lost filling can leave the tooth exposed and sensitive. Save the crown if you still have it. Do not use household glue to put it back on. Avoid sticky, crunchy, or hard foods until we can take a look.

If the tooth feels sharp, protect your tongue or cheek with orthodontic wax. If the area is painful or sensitive, call us so we can repair or replace the restoration and protect the tooth from further damage.

If you notice swelling or an abscess

A painful swelling near a tooth or gum may be an abscess. An abscess can signal infection, and it should not be ignored. You may notice swelling, a pimple-like bump on the gums, bad taste, fever, throbbing pain, or tenderness when biting.

Call us as soon as possible. We can evaluate the source, relieve the abscess, and treat the cause, which may involve draining the infection, root canal treatment, gum care, or another plan.

If a tooth cannot be saved

Our first goal is always to understand what happened and save the tooth when possible. Sometimes, though, a tooth is too damaged, infected, loose, or fractured to predictably repair. If that happens, we will explain your options clearly and help you plan the next step.

Advanced Dentistry by Design offers missing-tooth solutions, including dental implants, bridges, and dentures. If a dental emergency leads to tooth loss, we can help you restore function, appearance, and confidence with a plan that fits your needs.

What to bring to your emergency visit

Bring any tooth fragments, crowns, fillings, or dental appliances that came loose. If you were injured in an accident, tell us what happened and when. If you take medications or have medical conditions, bring that information too.

You do not need to diagnose yourself before you arrive. Just bring what you have, tell us what you feel, and we will take it from there.
