Why Are Regular Teeth Cleanings Important?

Regular teeth cleanings and exams are essential for maintaining excellent oral health. We strongly recommend that all patients have dental exams and cleanings every six months. At Advanced Dentistry by Design, we offer routine check-ups for children as young as four years old. Our passion is to help families of all ages achieve healthy, beautiful smiles, and regular dental checkups play a crucial role in allowing us to deliver long-lasting results.

What’s the Teeth Cleaning Process?

Many people dread going to the dentist, but teeth cleanings are generally painless and do wonders for your health. Before Dr. Woodlief performs the comprehensive exam, you will be greeted by one of our skilled dental hygienists. The hygienist will thoroughly remove plaque and tartar around and between your teeth—all the spots your toothbrush and floss can’t reach.

He or she will then clean your teeth with a special, high-powered brush to clean and polish your teeth. After your teeth are polished, the hygienist will gently floss between your teeth, rinse your mouth, and apply a fluoride treatment to protect your teeth from cavities.

What Happens During a Dental Exam?

Regular checkups and teeth cleanings lower your risk for oral health problems such as gum disease, decay, and infection. Dr. Woodlief will do the following during your comprehensive exam:

  • Use an x-ray to identify potential issues that lie below your mouth’s surface.
  • Look for cavities and signs of early infection.
  • Assess your gum health.
  • Locate any signs of gingivitis or gum disease.
  • Administer an oral cancer screening.

Dr. Woodlief will also inspect any dental restorations or fillings to ensure they’re still in good shape. He will also assess your teeth’s structure and look for signs of teeth grinding or clenching, a condition called bruxism.

If left untreated, bruxism leads to erosion, tooth decay, or tooth loss. Some patients who grind and clench their teeth do so while sleeping and often experience a sore jaw or mouth. Dr. Woodlief can remedy your orofacial pain and symptoms due to bruxism with a comprehensive dental exam.
