TMD and Bruxism Therapy

Many people do not realize that headaches, neck aches, migraines, and shoulder pain can all be related to your jaw health. Jaw dysfunction can even cause earaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness, and fatigue. Teeth sensitivity is also common, especially when teeth clenching or grinding is also present.

Taking daily headache medication can sometimes minimize the symptoms, but unfortunately, the underlying condition still exists and may worsen over time.

By addressing the health of your jaw joints and bite, we can effectively manage and reduce the amount of pain you experience, often eliminating them altogether. Addressing jaw pain and properly aligning your bite can also reduce facial tension and sore muscles, allowing you to enjoy better restorative sleep.

Dr. Woodlief takes a comprehensive approach to jaw treatment and will evaluate your symptoms along with the function of your joints and bite to determine the proper line of treatment for you. This may include splint therapy, injections, laser treatments, restorative dentistry, massage, or bite adjustment.

Each patient is different, and you can count on highly personalized treatment and results.

Contact Victor D. Woodlief, DMD, today to schedule an evaluation. We have helped hundreds of people lead pain-free lives by improving the health and comfort of their jaw joints.

Any time a joint clicks, pops, or locks, it indicates a potential condition.

Jaw joints tend to pop or click because the disc becomes stuck while rotating inside the joint. This occurs due to inflammation or joint dysfunction. When left untreated, a popping jaw may eventually lock open or closed and feel painful. Even eating and yawning can become uncomfortable experiences. This is why seeking treatment for anything that feels uncomfortable or unnatural right away is essential.

Dr. Woodlief is passionate about relieving the jaw pain and headaches that accompany a common condition called temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as TMJ or TMD.

He provides highly personalized care based on your symptoms, jaw function, and oral health as well as whether or not you grind your teeth. Not only does the treatment that Dr. Woodlief provide address the symptoms, it also corrects the cause of the problem, resulting in better jaw function, less pain, fewer headaches, and greater comfort in your day-to-day life.

Treatment may include some or all of the following TMJ therapies:

  • Oral appliance therapy
  • Occlusal equilibration
  • Therapeutic injections
  • Laser treatment
  • Massage
  • Orthodontics
  • Full mouth restoration

ALF treatment, or Advanced Lightwire Functionals, is a discreet orthopedic treatment that addresses orthodontic conditions, sleep disorders, and jaw dysfunction (TMD). When used in conjunction with tongue and chewing exercises, it can effectively treat both adults and kids who suffer from spatial issues concerning their teeth, jaw, and tongue.

ALF treatment works very much like a fixed retainer but can also address palatal expansion to create a healthier bite and alignment for your teeth, palate, and jawbone. It can expand the amount of space near the back of your mouth and throat to allow for the freer flow of oxygen as the muscles relax during sleep.

Small loops in the therapeutic wire attach to teeth, glide along the inside of your teeth near the gumline, and use constant low-force pressure to create palatal space in instances of sleep disorders and small palatal development. It can also address instances of aggressive orthodontic treatment or trauma.

Dr. Woodlief will make regular adjustments to the wire to further your treatment and monitor your results as you progress. Treatment times depend upon your specific needs. Dr. Woodlief can estimate your treatment time once you come to our San Jose dental office for your evaluation. We will help you determine if ALF treatment will work for you.
